North St. Paul is its own city: do we cover it?

Yes. North St. Paul is a distinct city, not a neighborhood of Saint Paul, and it has its own place on our schedule. Brick storefronts line the historic downtown, where Neumann's Bar has stood since 1887, and many buildings in town are older rather than new. MN 36 crosses the city, the Gateway State Trail follows an old Soo Line railroad grade through the middle of town, and I-694 runs close by.

Chimney sweep in North St. Paul: how we read an older brick stack

An older chimney tells its story from the outside in. We go in this order.

From the yard

We look for a lean, a gap between the chimney and the house, white mineral stains and brick that flakes away in pieces. These often show up before a leak does.

At the roofline

Here we read the flashing, the cap and the crown. A cracked or crumbling crown, or a cap that has rusted through, lets water into the brick below.

Inside the flue

We sweep out the soot and creosote, then look at the liner. Cracked clay tile or open joints are worth knowing about before the next fire. A camera goes in when the job calls for it, and a Level 2 inspection always uses one.

Repair, repoint or rebuild: deciding by the damage

We match the fix to the damage, and we show you the damage first.

  • Repoint when the bricks are sound and only the mortar is worn. New mortar is cut into the joints.
  • Repair the crown or cap when the top is cracked or rusted but the brick below is solid.
  • Rebuild the top courses when the brick itself crumbles or has loosened.

A chimney that leans is a different case. Keep people and cars clear of the base, and call before anyone lights a fire. A lean is not a do-it-yourself fix: stay back and let us look.

North St. Paul questions

Older chimneys, parks and city names

Short answers for older brick homes.

I live near Silver Lake. Does the park change anything for my chimney?

Only in small ways. Trees near the park drop leaves, and an uncapped flue collects them. If you have a screened cap, you have already dealt with it. If you are not sure, we check the cap on the visit.

A cracked concrete cap on an old brick chimney: replace or repair?

If the crack is hairline and the cap is otherwise sound, it can often be sealed. If the cap is pulling away or letting water in, replace it. We show you the damage, then you pick.

Can a chimney be repointed in winter?

Mortar needs mild weather to cure, so most repointing waits for spring through fall. If the brick is loose or water is getting in now, we make it safe first and plan the repointing for warmer weather.

My chimney has white stains on the brick. Is that serious?

White powder is mineral salt carried out by moisture, so it points to water moving through the brick. It is not always urgent, but it is a reason to check the crown, cap and mortar before winter.

Does a bricked-up fireplace still need a look?

Yes, if you plan to open it. The flue behind a sealed opening may be blocked or cracked. We check it first, so you know what is behind the brick before you light anything.
