Gas fireplace repair and yearly service

Gas fireplace repair in MN covers the parts that stop it lighting or staying lit: igniters, thermocouples, valves, glass and vents. Sterling repairs and services gas fireplaces and inserts across the east metro, and our own crew does the gas line work, so one team takes the job from first call to last connection.

What is a yearly gas fireplace service, and what does it cover?

It is a tune-up for the whole unit. We clean the burner and the glass, check the pilot or igniter, test the safety controls, look over the venting and make sure the flame behaves the way it should. Catching a weak part now is easier than finding out on the coldest night.

A yearly service takes the place of the sweep a wood fireplace gets, and the difference between service or repair comes down to whether something has stopped working.

Why won't my gas fireplace light or stay lit?

Three parts account for most of it. An igniter or pilot that has worn out, a thermocouple that no longer senses the flame, or a valve that has stopped opening. Dirt, a loose connection or a failing remote can look the same from the couch, so we test before we replace anything.

If you smell gas

Leave first

Smell gas? Leave the house right away, then call your gas utility from outside. Use the safety pages from your gas utility, such as Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy.

Once the utility has cleared the house, call us and we will take it from there.

What we do

How a service or repair goes

  1. Listen first

You tell us what the fireplace does, when it started and what you have tried.

  2. Check the system

We test the pilot or igniter, thermocouple, valve and the controls.

  3. Clean the unit

Burner, glass, logs and the firebox get cleaned, with drop cloths down.

  4. Check the venting

We look at the vent run and termination for blockage and damage.

  5. Fix and explain

We repair what failed, run the unit to confirm, and walk you through the work.

Do you do the gas line work yourselves?

Yes. Gas line work is done in-house by our own crew, so you are not handed off to a second company halfway through the job. If a unit needs a new line or a repaired connection, we handle it.

Is it safe to run with cracked glass or after a power cut?

Check the manufacturer's manual and stop using the unit until it has been looked at. Cracked glass and power-dependent controls both change how the fireplace behaves, and the manual tells you what is safe for your model. Call us and we will inspect it.

Gas fireplace and insert: same service?

The service is much the same. An insert sits inside an old masonry fireplace, so we also look at the liner and venting behind it. Tell us which you have when you call.

How is gas fireplace work priced?

Gas fireplace work is priced after we see the unit. The model, the parts it needs and the vent run all matter. The services page shows the jobs we price up front, and a call gets you the figure for yours.

Questions

Gas fireplace questions

Short answers first.

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year is the habit we recommend. A yearly visit keeps the burner clean and finds worn parts before they fail. Call sooner if the flame looks different or the unit takes longer to start.

Is it the igniter or the valve when mine clicks and never lights?

It can be either, or a dirty pilot assembly. Clicking means the igniter is trying to spark. We test the parts in order and replace only what failed.

Can you repair a gas fireplace insert?

Yes. We repair and service inserts as well as built-in gas fireplaces. Tell us the brand and what it does, and we will plan the visit.

Why does my gas fireplace smell or leave a film on the glass?

New units can smell as paint and oils burn off, and a film on the glass usually builds up over time. A strong or lasting odor is worth a call, and a gas smell means leave first.

Do I need a new gas line for my fireplace?

That depends on the fireplace and the line already in the wall. Our crew does the gas line work itself, so we can look at the connection and tell you what the unit needs.

East metro

Where gas fireplace calls come from

Gas fireplace service across the east metro, including these towns.

What else might you need?

A gas fireplace shares its chimney or vent with other systems, so a chimney inspection can pair well with a service. For a wood-burning unit, see chimney sweeping.
