An Eagan, MN chimney sweep for yearly gas fireplace care
Our Eagan, MN chimney sweep crew handles both kinds of fireplace: a yearly service keeps a gas unit's burner, pilot and venting working, and a sweep clears soot and creosote from a wood-burning flue. We also repair parts that fail. Call and tell us which fireplace you have, and we will book the right visit.

What does a yearly gas fireplace service cover?
A yearly service is a cleaning and a check of the parts that make the flame and carry the fumes away. The burner collects dust and lint, and pilots, igniters and valves wear. We go through the unit in this order:
- Clean the burner, the logs or media and the glass
- Check the pilot, the igniter and the thermocouple
- Look over the valve and the gas connections we can reach
- Inspect the venting and the cap where it leaves the house
- Run the fireplace and watch the flame
We lay drop cloths before we start and tidy up before we leave. The gas fireplace repair page lists the repairs that can follow if something is worn.
If the logs have shifted or the glass looks hazy, say so when you call. A dirty burner or logs sitting wrong change the flame, and we reset them as part of the service. Fall is when many people light the pilot for the first time since spring, so a service booked before that first fire means the burner is clean and the venting has been checked. Gas line work is done by our own crew.
When is it a repair and not a service?
A service keeps a working fireplace working. A repair replaces something that has stopped doing its job. This table sorts the common signs.
| What you notice | Service or repair |
|---|---|
| It has been a year, and it works fine | Service |
| A light film of dust or haze on the glass | Service |
| The pilot will not stay lit | Repair |
| A delay, then a thump when the flame catches | Repair, and stop using it until it is looked at |
| Glass that is cracked | Repair; follow the manufacturer's manual and leave it off |
The longer guide, Gas Fireplace Service or Repair: Which Do You Need?, walks through each sign. A wood-burning fireplace is different: it needs a chimney sweep, and our sweep page explains that visit.
Chimney sweep in Eagan for wood-burning fireplaces
A wood fire leaves soot and creosote on the flue walls, and creosote can ignite. A sweep brushes it out. If you burn regularly, ask us about a sweep and an inspection together. If you burn now and then, an inspection before the season is a fair start. If the flue ever catches fire, leave the house and call 911; the NFPA heating safety page lists what to watch for.
Attached homes, shared rooflines
Townhome rows in Eagan share a roof, and sometimes a rulebook. Roof and cap repairs may sit with the association, while the flue inside your unit is the part you live with. We inspect that part and walk you through what we found, so you can brief the people who decide.
Chimney repair and dryer vents in Eagan
Caps, crowns, flashing and dampers get repaired after an inspection, and a dryer vent can be cleaned on the same visit as the fireplace. Starting prices for each service are on the services page.
My gas fireplace will not stay lit after summer
The first cold night is when a pilot that sat idle since spring shows its trouble. Remote batteries, the wall switch and the lighting steps in your manual are fair places to look. If the pilot lights, then drops out when you let go, a worn thermocouple or a dirty pilot is the usual suspect, and that is a repair.
A smell of gas means leave first and phone from outside. Call your gas utility, such as Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy; both publish safety pages.
What Eagan owners want to know
Service, townhomes and the first fire of fall.
Do I sweep a gas fireplace like a wood one?
No. A gas fireplace gets a service, not a brush-and-sweep, because gas leaves no thick wood soot. The service cleans the burner and checks the pilot, valve and venting. Our guide to service or repair shows which you need.
One side of our townhome row has a rusted cap. What do we do?
Start with your association, since a shared row usually shares rules for roofs and caps. We can inspect the flue and cap that serve your unit and tell you their condition. A rusted cap can let rain into the flue, so do not let it sit.
Does a gas fireplace need to be checked every year?
A yearly service is the habit we recommend. Dust builds on the burner and parts wear a little each season. The gas fireplace page lists what the check covers.
My gas fireplace is dead and it is cold out. How fast can you come?
Usually within the same week, evenings and weekends included. Call, tell us what the unit does, and we find the earliest time that works, then confirm by phone before we arrive.
My gas fireplace smells like burning dust each fall. Is that normal?
A light burning-dust smell on the first fire of the season is common, because dust cooks off the burner. A service clears it. A smell of gas is different: leave the house, then call your gas utility, such as Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy from outside.
Not sure if it is a service or a repair?
Describe the flame and the last time it was serviced. We phone ahead to confirm.
