The Sterling Chimney Sweep teamGas fireplace service or repair: which do you need?
Book a service when your gas fireplace works and you want to keep it that way. Book a repair when something has stopped working or changed. Service is a yearly tune-up, and repair fixes a failed part. The symptoms below help you sort it out.
What is a service, and what is a repair?
A service is routine care. We clean the burner and glass, test the safety controls, check the pilot or igniter and look over the venting. Nothing has to be wrong. The aim is to find worn parts before they leave you cold.
A repair starts with a symptom. The fireplace will not light, shuts itself off, flames look different or something smells. We find which part failed, replace it and test the unit.
Why does one fault look like another?
Gas fireplaces rely on a short chain: a spark or pilot, a sensor that proves the flame, a valve that releases gas and a vent that clears the exhaust. When any link weakens, the whole fireplace can refuse to start, so one symptom can have several causes. That is why we test in order and replace only what failed.
What you can check safely
- Make sure the wall switch, remote and batteries are working and set correctly.
- Look at the glass for dirt, film or cracks.
- Note what the fireplace does when you press the switch: clicking, humming or silence.
Stop and call: if you smell gas, leave the house first, then call your gas utility from outside. See the safety pages from Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy. Cracked glass also means stopping use and following the manufacturer's manual until it has been looked at.
When to stop and call
Call us for any gas smell once the utility has cleared the house, for cracked glass, a flame that is lazy or yellow, a unit that shuts off on its own, or a pilot that will not stay lit. Do not take apart the burner, valve or gas connection yourself.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Works fine, a year has passed | Normal wear and dust | Yearly service |
| Clicks but never lights | Igniter, pilot assembly or valve | Repair |
| Lights, then shuts off | Thermocouple or sensor | Repair |
| Film on the glass | Residue from normal burning | Service |
| Cracked glass | Heat stress or impact | Stop use, call for repair |

Service or repair questions
Short answers first.
Can one visit be both a service and a repair?
Yes. If we find a failed part during a service, we explain it and can fix it in the same appointment. Tell us about any symptom when you book.
Is a yearly service worth it if the fireplace works?
Usually, yes. Dust and wear build quietly, and a yearly service finds them while the fireplace still works, which is cheaper and calmer than a cold-night failure.
Should I reset the pilot myself?
Follow the lighting steps in your manufacturer's manual if you are comfortable with them. If the pilot keeps going out, something is failing, and it is time to book a repair.
Why won't my gas fireplace light after sitting all summer?
Dust, a worn igniter or a weak sensor are common reasons after months idle. Stop using it if it keeps failing and call us so we can test the parts in order.
Not sure which one it is? Describe it.
Tell us what the fireplace does, and we will say whether it needs a service or a repair.
