Concord streets or the bluff top: what each chimney needs

Inver Grove Heights grew in layers. The Concord neighborhood in the northeast holds some of the city's oldest housing, below a bluff line that follows the Mississippi. On top of the bluff, newer neighborhoods have curving streets and cul-de-sacs. A chimney in one place needs different questions from a chimney in the other.

Older streets near Concord

  • Look hardest at the mortar joints, crown and flue tile, if the chimney is brick.
  • Often worth asking about: crumbling mortar, or a fireplace closed up for years.
  • First booking to ask for: an inspection, then a sweep or repair.

Newer bluff-top neighborhoods

  • Look hardest at the cap, flashing and flue connections, whatever the chimney is made of.
  • Often worth asking about: a gas fireplace that will not stay lit.
  • First booking to ask for: a gas service, with the dryer vent beside it.

Not sure which side of the bluff you are on?

If you are not sure, tell us the street and anything you know about the house. We ask the right questions and send the right tools. Both kinds of home get the same careful look: drop cloths first, an industrial vacuum for the soot, and a camera when the job calls for it. A Level 2 never goes without one.

The usual suspects when a gas insert keeps quitting

Start by noting when it happens: right after lighting, after twenty minutes, or only on cold, windy nights. A worn thermocouple, a dirty pilot assembly and a weak igniter each cause a shut-off, and so can a vent that is partly blocked. Do not open the unit yourself. A service finds the cause and the unit is repaired by the same crew that handles the gas line work. Smell gas, and you leave the house first, then call your gas utility, such as Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy, from outside.

Inver Grove Heights questions

Bluff top, river streets and old brick

Answers for both kinds of home.

A cul-de-sac house on the bluff top has a gas insert that shuts off. Where do I start?

Start with a gas fireplace service. Note when it shuts off and call us with that detail. The cause may be a worn part or a vent problem, and a technician finds out which. Please do not open the unit yourself.

My dryer vent exits at the roof. Is that a separate trip?

No, it joins the same dryer visit. A roof exit calls for a different approach from a wall one, and we plan for it when you tell us on the call. We can add the chimney to that appointment too.

Our brick chimney is older than anyone can say. Where do you start?

Start with an inspection, and a Level 2 with its camera if the flue is hard to read. Then we recommend only the work the chimney needs, and you decide.

How do I know whether my chimney is brick or a metal flue?

Look at the outside. Brick shows rows of mortared brick all the way up. A framed chimney clad in siding or stone veneer, topped with a metal cap, usually has a metal flue inside. We confirm it on the visit.

Do you cover the whole city, or only certain neighborhoods?

The whole city, from the older streets near Concord to the newer neighborhoods on the bluff. Tell us the street and the week that suits you, and we find a time, evenings and weekends included.

Which street are you on?

Give us the street and what the chimney is doing. We choose the right visit from there.
