A St. Paul Park, MN chimney sweep for the top of the chimney: caps and crowns
Our St. Paul Park, MN chimney sweep visits start at the top, because the cap and crown keep rain, animals and debris out of everything below. We sweep the flue, check the top and repair what has failed. Call, tell us what you see from the yard, and we book this week.

Where water gets in: three parts, one top
Rain gets into a chimney at the top, and what stands between the weather and the brick is small: a cap, a crown and, on a framed chimney, a chase cover. When one fails, the brick, the flue and the wall behind them take the weather. Fixing the top is often the smallest repair that heads off the bigger ones.
The cap
A metal lid over the flue. Rust streaks, a bent lid or a missing one mean rain and animals can reach the flue.
The crown
The slab of mortar around the flue that sheds water off the brick. Hairline cracks, gaps or crumbling at its edge mean water is working into the brick below.
The chase cover
The metal lid over a framed chimney. Rust or standing water on it puts the wood chase underneath at risk.
You can see most of this from the ground, and a phone photo zoomed in often shows it. Leave the roof to us.
Chimney sweep in St. Paul Park: what we check at the top
- The cap: is it there, fastened, and sound
- The crown: cracks, gaps, and whether it still slopes water away from the flue
- The flashing where the chimney meets the roof
- The upper courses of brick and the mortar between them
Then we sweep the flue, with drop cloths down and an industrial vacuum alongside the brushes. Afterward we tell you what we saw. A cap that has been in place for years may only need a good look. A hairline crack in the crown may call for sealing, and a crumbling one for a rebuild. A crown's useful life depends on how it was built and how it has weathered. Rain that finds its way in turns into a chimney leak, and the top is the first place we trace it. Starting prices for caps, crowns and sweeps are on the services page.
St. Paul Park is not St. Paul: do we come to both?
Yes, we cover both, and they are separate cities. St. Paul Park is its own city on the east bank of the Mississippi, downstream from Saint Paul. When you call, give us the street and say St. Paul Park.
Caps and crowns, straight answers
The top of your chimney, explained.
How do I know if my crown is cracked if I cannot get on the roof?
Look from across the street on a dry day, or zoom in with your phone. Dark lines across the top slab, gaps where it meets the flue or chunks on the shingles all point to the crown. Tell us what you saw and we check it up close.
Rain is getting past the top of my chimney. Is it the cap or the crown?
It can be either, and sometimes both. A missing cap lets rain drop straight down the flue. A cracked crown lets water into the brick. We look at the cap, crown and flashing together and tell you which one let it in.
Can you cap a chimney that has never had one?
Yes. We fit a cap sized to your flue, with a screen where animals are a worry. It is one of the simplest ways to protect a flue, and we can add it to a sweep visit.
Is a rusty cap a repair or a replacement?
Surface rust on a sound cap can wait. Rust that has eaten through the metal, or a cap that wobbles in the wind, should be replaced. We show you which one yours is before you decide.
Do you work on the metal cover over a framed chimney?
Yes. Standing water or rust on that cover points to a replacement, and we check the wood chase beneath it for damage while we are up.
