Chimney sweep in Little Canada: why a park behind the house matters

Little Canada has several parks. If your lot backs onto one, or has mature trees near the roofline, leaves, seeds and small branches can drop onto the chimney top all fall. An open flue catches them, and a handful of leaves in a damper can mean smoke in the room on the first fire.

A screened cap, and a short list before winter

A cap is a lid over the flue with mesh sides. It keeps out leaves, rain and animals, while the smoke still leaves freely. If your chimney has no cap, or the mesh has rusted away, a screened cap is the simplest fix.

  1. Look at the top from the yard, to see whether a cap is there and whole.
  2. Fit or replace a screened cap, so leaves, rain and animals stay out.
  3. Sweep the flue, to clear soot, creosote and anything that fell in.
  4. Check that the damper opens fully, so smoke leaves the room.

If the damper sticks, do not force it. Forcing a stuck damper can warp the plate or break the handle, and a repair is the safe way through.

Something moving in the flue after dark?

Scratching, thumping or squeaking at night usually means a small animal has found the way down. Do not light a fire, and do not reach into the flue. Call us. Once the animal is out, a screened cap goes on top. The law protects some wildlife that uses chimneys, so describe what you hear before anyone reaches in.
