New furnace, old chimney: what changes inside the flue?
A chimney is sized for the appliance it first served. A newer furnace or water heater can send out cooler exhaust, and in a wide old flue that exhaust may condense on the walls instead of rising out. Over time the moisture can eat into the flue lining. A liner, a snug new pipe inside the old flue, fixes the mismatch.
The flue itself gives the answer. So the visit goes like this:
- We note what is connected to the flue now: furnace, water heater, fireplace or stove.
- We sweep out any soot and debris.
- We look at the flue lining, with a camera when the job calls for it, and the Level 2 inspection always uses one.
- We tell you whether the flue is sound, needs a liner or needs only a repair, and why.
A gas insert raises the same question, and the inspection answers it.
Chimney sweep in West St. Paul: liner, cap or nothing at all
Not every flue needs a liner. A sound clay flue that matches its appliance can stay as it is. A cracked one, or one far too wide for the new equipment, usually calls for a liner. A rusty cap or loose flashing needs its own fix, and we say so. You hear all three options with the reasons, and you choose. Starting prices for liners and inspections sit on the services page.
Two cities with similar names: which one is yours?
Both are covered, and they are different cities. West St. Paul lies on the west bank of the Mississippi. The name has a history: an earlier West St. Paul (1874 to 1887) became part of Saint Paul's Lower West Side, and the present city took the name back in 1889. We also work in Saint Paul itself, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Safety first around a furnace and a flue
When a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, everyone goes outside and you call 911. If you smell gas near the furnace or water heater, leave first, then call your gas utility, such as Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy, from outside. Their safety pages are at Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy.
Furnace changes, Robert Street and city names
The questions we get after a heating upgrade.
We replaced the furnace. Does the chimney need anything?
Possibly. The old flue was sized for the old furnace, and a newer one may need a liner. An inspection checks the flue against what is now connected. If it needs nothing, we say so.
The furnace installer said the chimney needs a liner. Should I get a second look?
It is reasonable to ask. We inspect the flue against what is now connected and tell you whether a liner is needed, and which kind, before anything is ordered.
Does a liner change how the fireplace works?
Not for the worse in daily use. A liner sized to the appliance gives the exhaust a snug path, so it draws well and keeps moisture off the old tile.
My water heater is the only thing left on the chimney. Is that a problem?
It can be. A single small appliance on a big flue produces little heat, so exhaust can cool and condense. We inspect the flue and recommend a liner if it has outgrown its use.
Can you work evenings after a furnace swap?
Yes. Evening and weekend appointments are open, and we are available until 8pm every day. Tell us when suits you and we confirm the time by phone.
